A Fresh Start Deserves a Fresh Look

Back to school isn’t just about sharpened pencils and new notebooks. It’s also about stepping into spaces that inspire. The right signage can transform a hallway, gymnasium, or classroom into a place that radiates pride and belonging. At PosterTech Group, we’ve seen how impactful signage, whether bold vinyl wraps in Alberta schools or timeless commemorative walls, can set the stage for a successful year.

When students walk into schools across Edmonton, whether part of Edmonton Public Schools, Edmonton Catholic Schools, or other districts, they’re not just returning to class, they’re entering environments that tell stories, celebrate legacies, and remind them that they’re part of something bigger than themselves.

School Spirit Brought to Life

Esther Starkman School makes its pride impossible to miss. With towering Husky graphics greeting students at the gym doors, the message is clear: this is a place of teamwork, spirit, and determination. For students, those larger-than-life visuals become part of their daily rhythm, fueling a sense of identity and camaraderie.

This kind of school branding goes far beyond decoration. It gives students something to rally around, strengthens school pride, and makes every return to the building feel exciting. Vinyl wraps in Alberta schools like this serve as a visual anchor, reminding students and staff of their shared purpose.

Honoring Leaders, Inspiring Futures

Dr. Lila Fahlman School takes a different, but equally powerful approach. Large-format signage there highlights the incredible contributions of Dr. Lila Fahlman, an educator and advocate whose legacy continues to inspire. Her story, told through vibrant imagery and thoughtful design, stands as a daily reminder that perseverance and leadership can change lives.

This kind of storytelling signage does more than decorate a wall. It turns a building into a living museum, a place where students can look up, literally, and see the impact of those who paved the way before them. It ensures that their return to school is accompanied by inspiration and context.

Elevating Learning Environments

At Elder Dr. Francis Whiskeyjack High School, signage carries the school’s identity right into the heart of classrooms and gathering spaces. From bold wall lettering to clean, logo-framed whiteboards, every piece of signage reflects intentional design. These details, while subtle, add up to a learning environment where students feel grounded in their school culture.

Signage like this isn’t simply functional. It’s a visual language that reinforces values, builds continuity, and enhances the atmosphere where learning happens. Vinyl wraps in Alberta schools contribute to this effect by turning ordinary surfaces into extraordinary touchpoints.

Community Connection at Its Core

Schools are more than institutions, they’re hubs of community life. Signage that honors local heroes, celebrates school mascots, or highlights collective achievements helps tie schools to their neighborhoods. At PosterTech Group, we believe signage is a bridge between the school and the wider community, a way of showing that education doesn’t happen in isolation.

Whether it’s a mosaic mural at Fahlman Flyers or a commemorative display of Alex Janvier, for Alex Janvier School, these projects affirm that schools hold a special place in the hearts of families. As back-to-school season unfolds, this sense of connection becomes even more vital, reminding students and parents alike that they’re supported by a community invested in their success.

The Takeaway: Back to School, Back to Belonging

Back-to-school season is about more than the logistics of schedules and supplies. It’s about reestablishing a sense of pride, identity, and unity. The right signage sets the tone, creates memorable first impressions, and ensures students return to spaces that feel alive and meaningful.

At PosterTech Group, we’re proud to contribute to that journey. By creating specialty signage and vinyl wraps in Alberta schools, we help transform ordinary spaces into environments filled with inspiration, pride, and connection.

A Fresh Start

Your Signage Is Speaking, But Is Anyone Listening?

In a world flooded with visual content, signage can no longer afford to be static background noise. It’s the silent salesperson on your storefront. The greeter at your event. The memory cue on your vehicle. Yet too often, businesses treat signage as an afterthought, missing a golden opportunity to connect, convert, and stay top-of-mind.

At PosterTech Group, we know that exceptional signage is about more than materials and print, it’s about strategic communication. When designed well, signage doesn’t just get seen, it gets remembered. And if you’re a business operating in Alberta, where visibility can mean the difference between a walk-in and a missed opportunity, you need signage that works as hard as you do.

These 7 proven signage design strategies will help ensure that whether it’s a banner, a billboard, or vinyl wraps in Alberta, your message doesn’t just exist, it makes an impact.

1. Design for Real-World Distance and Speed

If they can’t read it, it’s not working

Signage isn’t viewed in a vacuum. It’s read while walking, driving, parking, or even glancing up from a phone. Designing without considering distance and speed is one of the most common (and costly) mistakes.

A simple rule: for every 10 feet of viewing distance, your letters need to be at least 1 inch tall. That means text for a roadside banner viewed from 100 feet away should be at least 10 inches high. For fast-moving impressions, like vinyl wraps in Alberta, bold, minimal messaging is even more critical.

Don’t guess. Test your layout at scale. PosterTech Group often creates mockups at actual viewing sizes to guarantee legibility before printing begins.

2. Use Contrast to Command Attention

Subtlety is not your friend in signage

Your design may look beautiful on a screen, but if it doesn’t jump out in the real world, it won’t perform. Strong contrast between text and background ensures readability across all lighting conditions, from sunny sidewalks to dim indoor events.

Pair bold, sans-serif fonts with high-contrast colors like white on navy, black on yellow, or red on white. Avoid script fonts, gradients, or light-on-light combinations that fade out at a distance.

PosterTech Group uses tested color combinations and contrast models to make sure your signage performs in every environment Alberta throws at it, from bright prairie sun to snowy parking lots.

3. Say One Thing, and Say It Loud

Too much info means no info gets through

If your signage tries to do too much, listing services, phone numbers, offers, and taglines, it overwhelms your viewer. Most people will glance at a sign for less than 3 seconds. You need to prioritize one clear message.

Start with a single, specific goal: drive walk-ins, promote a sale, boost brand recognition, or direct traffic. Then, strip everything else away that doesn’t support that goal.

PosterTech Group works with clients to distill messages down to their core value, then amplifies it with design that gets right to the point.

4. Use Fonts That Work, Not Just Ones That Look Cool

Aesthetic matters, but function matters more

Your typeface carries your tone, but it also needs to carry legibility. Decorative fonts may fit your brand vibe, but if they can’t be read quickly, especially from a distance or in motion, they’re hurting your message.

Stick to strong, geometric sans-serif fonts for headings. Keep body copy minimal or avoid it altogether on signage. Limit font families to two at most to maintain clean visual hierarchy.

PosterTech Group’s design team selects fonts with readability at the forefront, ensuring they not only reflect your brand but also perform under pressure.

5. Make Use of Natural Focal Points

Great signage directs the eye, not just fills space

Your viewer’s eye should move through your signage the way you intended. Good design leads the eye from headline, to subtext, to call-to-action in a clean, intentional flow.

Use shapes, lines, and spacing to create visual anchors. Group related elements. Frame key messages with color blocks or imagery that draws attention. And make sure CTAs are big, bold, and immediately visible.

PosterTech Group uses proven layout systems to ensure flow and function are baked into the design, not added as an afterthought.

6. Tailor Your Design to the Environment

Where your sign lives affects how it should look

A window decal, a construction site banner, and a vinyl wrap are not created equal. The context, indoor vs. outdoor, foot traffic vs. drive-by, temporary vs. permanent, should dictate the material, size, and design complexity.

A sandwich board needs bold text and contrast for passing pedestrians. Vinyl wraps in Alberta need large, clean graphics to cut through road clutter. Indoor hanging banners may allow for more detailed messaging and subtle color palettes.

PosterTech Group doesn’t offer one-size-fits-all signage. Every piece is designed and produced with location, audience, and use-case in mind.

7. Never Sacrifice Quality for Speed or Cost

Cheap signage feels like a cheap brand

It’s tempting to go with low-cost printers or do-it-yourself templates. But poor quality is immediately visible, blurry prints, peeling vinyl, flimsy banners, and reflects directly on your brand.

Quality signage is an investment that pays off in perception, durability, and performance. PosterTech Group uses only premium materials, state-of-the-art printing, and meticulous quality control, because you only get one chance to make a strong visual impression.

Ready to Stand Out? PosterTech Group Has Your Back

Good signage turns glances into action. Great signage turns first impressions into long-term customers. Whether you’re rebranding, launching, or growing, your signs are a vital part of the story your business tells.

PosterTech Group combines creative expertise with real-world signage strategy, designing and delivering signage that not only looks sharp but also performs under pressure. From storefronts to vehicle wraps, trade shows to directional signage, we bring your brand to life, boldly, clearly, and effectively.

Fostering Community Through Creative Signage at Thelma Chalifoux School

At PosterTech Group, we believe that our work goes beyond simply creating signage—it’s about fostering a deeper connection with the community. When we had the opportunity to collaborate with Thelma Chalifoux School, we knew it was going to be something special. Working within local schools and seeing the impact of our designs on students and staff alike is a reward in itself. Thelma Chalifoux School, named after a respected Métis senator and leader, is a place of learning, inspiration, and cultural significance, and we are proud to have contributed to enhancing its atmosphere with custom signage.

Creating Meaningful Signage for Thelma Chalifoux School

Schools are more than just buildings—they’re the heart of a community. At PosterTech Group, we understand how vital it is to create environments that are not only functional but also visually inspiring. From large-scale projects to fine details, every piece we create tells a story. Thelma Chalifoux School’s signage project was especially important to us because it allowed us to incorporate cultural pride, school spirit, and motivational messages into one cohesive design.

Highlighting Key Projects

Indigenous Crest Panels in the Atrium and Office

One of the most significant features we were honored to work on was the installation of Indigenous Crest Panels. The four large panels, proudly displayed in the school’s atrium, measured 44” x 68”. These digitally printed full-color designs were printed on the second surface of 1/4″ clear acrylic, with raised text fabricated from 4 mm white acrylic, and mounted on stainless steel standoffs.

The meaning behind these crests is deeply connected to Indigenous heritage, and they serve as a powerful symbol of cultural respect and acknowledgment within the school environment. The smaller, yet equally impactful, Indigenous Crest Panels (15” x 23”) were mounted in the office, giving both students and visitors a constant reminder of the school’s commitment to cultural inclusivity and education.

Senators Wall Signage

Thelma Chalifoux School prides itself on its legacy, and the Senators Wall Signage is a testament to that. Spanning 108” x 32”, this bold and commanding piece was crafted from 1/4″ acrylic and mounted on stainless steel standoffs. Its design honors the school’s mascot, the Senators, and reinforces school pride.

Sport-Themed and Inspirational Wall Graphics

Walking by the gym at Thelma Chalifoux School is an experience in itself, thanks to the vibrant sport-themed wall graphics we installed. These dynamic graphics energize the space, inspiring both athletes and spectators. Sportsmanship, teamwork, and physical excellence are all captured within the designs, turning ordinary walls into motivational displays.

Throughout the rest of the school, inspirational wall graphics were placed strategically in high-traffic areas. These graphics, featuring empowering quotes and messages, are from the popular TV character Ted Lasso and real-life inspiration, Thelma Chalifoux herself. They offer moments of reflection and encouragement to students as they go about their day.

STEM Wall Signage

One of the standout pieces of this project was the STEM Wall Signage, measuring 90” x 45”. Made from brushed aluminum Dibond, this signage celebrates the school’s dedication to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The sleek, modern design reflects the innovative spirit of the students who walk these halls. The letters and symbols, carefully printed on the brushed aluminum surface, lend a sense of permanence and importance to the subject matter, reminding students of the exciting possibilities that lie ahead in the world of STEM.

Our Commitment to the Community

We are passionate about supporting our local schools and organizations. Being involved in projects like the one at Thelma Chalifoux School reinforces our commitment to community and education. We recognize the influence that our signage can have on both the physical environment and the people who interact with it. That’s why we take every project to heart, knowing that the final product will become part of a lasting legacy.

Creating specialty signage for schools isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about leaving a positive mark on the community. Every time we work with an institution like Thelma Chalifoux School, we see firsthand how our signage can inspire and uplift students, educators, and visitors. Whether it’s through cultural representation, school spirit, or motivational design, we are proud to be a part of shaping these spaces.

Community Contributions

Working with Thelma Chalifoux School has been a truly rewarding experience for the team at PosterTech Group. From Indigenous Crest Panels that celebrate cultural heritage to STEM Wall Signage that sparks curiosity, each piece was crafted with care and attention to detail. We’re proud to be part of a project that enhances the learning environment for students while also contributing to the broader community.

As we look back on the work we’ve done, we’re reminded of the importance of our role in shaping spaces that inspire, motivate, and educate. And with each new project, we continue to build on our commitment to supporting schools and the communities they serve.

Unleashing Drama Season with Broadway Style Signage

We’re excited to share a recent project we worked on for our pals over at Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton, Alberta.

We had a blast crafting some Broadway Style Signage for the Entrance to the new dedicated Theatre Space for Performing Arts Program Season  that’s bound to make any passerby do a double-take.

Picture this: lively wall graphics bursting with color and images from student-led productions over the years complete with production Playbills posted on the walls. It’s like a visual journey through their creativity and talent, aiming to inspire everyone wandering those halls. Working with schools like Ross Sheppard is a joy, seeing firsthand how design can spark imagination.

Ross Sheppard High School has always been a hub of creativity and innovation, nurturing young minds and providing them with a conducive learning environment. In our ongoing partnership, PosterTech had the privilege to work on many exciting projects, enhancing the school’s atmosphere with captivating murals, a stunning media wall backdrop, and eye-catching 3D fabricated text.

Got a creative idea brewing for your own space? We’d love to bring it to life! Reach out and let’s brainstorm together.

We recently had the privilege of working on a remarkable project at Dr. Anne Anderson High School. Our team installed a magnificent mural/sign that not only adds vibrancy to the school but also showcases the incredible potential of modern printing and fabrication techniques. In this post, we break down the details of the project and highlight the innovative printing techniques we used.

Enhancing the Space

The focal point of our work was a captivating wall mural/sign measuring an impressive 36 feet wide and 11 feet tall. This mural/sign was digitally printed in full color on aluminum composite panels (ACP) and expertly installed directly onto the drywall. The use of ACP ensures durability and longevity, making the piece a lasting addition to the school’s environment.

Stunning School Logo

To emphasize the school’s identity, we incorporated a stylized representation of the letter “A,” which serves as the logo for Dr. Anne Anderson High School. This logo was digitally cut from white Celtec and carefully installed on the surface of the ACP. Anyone entering the room will be drawn in by the stark contrast of the white against the sign’s vibrant background.

Bringing Depth with 3D Letters

To further enhance the mural/sign, we integrated 3D letters along the top, adding a captivating visual element. These letters were digitally cut from clear acrylic and meticulously installed on the surface of the ACP. Because acrylic is translucent, light can interact with the letters to give them depth and substance. The outcome is a visually appealing composition that gives the installation an additional level of interest.

From our talks with clients, here are three benefits of updating school safety signage:

Improved safety:

Safety signage can help to identify potential hazards and remind students and staff of safety protocols, which can help to prevent accidents and injuries on school grounds.

Enhanced emergency preparedness:

By indicating the location of emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits, safety signage can help to ensure that students and staff can quickly and safely evacuate the school in the event of an emergency.

Increased awareness:

Displaying safety signage throughout the school can raise awareness of potential hazards and safety protocols among students and staff, creating a culture of safety that can help to prevent accidents and injuries.

Overall, implementing safety signage in your school is a simple and effective way to help ensure the safety of your students and staff. By clearly identifying potential hazards and emergency equipment, and raising awareness of safety protocols, you can create a safer environment for everyone in your school community.

Signs in school are important to communicating proper messages, branding and school building spirit. However, there may come a time when it becomes necessary to consider replacing this signage. There are a variety of reasons why this may be the case including damage or wear and tear, regulatory changes, and a lack of effectiveness. Whatever the reason, it is important to carefully evaluate the need for new signage before making a decision. Here are five key reasons why you might need to replace your old school signage.

1. The old signage is outdated:

If the old signage no longer reflects the brand image or message that you want to convey, it may be time to update it. This is especially important if the old signage is no longer in line with your current business goals or marketing strategy.

2. Improved Visibility and Safety:

Old school signage can become faded or difficult to read over time, leading to decreased visibility for potential customers. Upgrading to new signage can increase the clarity and readability, making it easier for people to find understand your message. This is not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for safety reasons. Damaged signage can be difficult to read or interpret, which can lead to confusion or accidents.

3. It doesn’t work like it used to

If the old signage is not attracting the desired attention or is not effectively communicating your message, it may be time to consider replacing it. This is especially important if you have noticed a decline in business or foot traffic that may be attributed to the ineffectiveness of your signage.

4. School Pride

Newer signage options often offer more customization options, allowing you to tailor your vision and messaging to fit the specific needs needs of your school’s admin, clubs or teams. Outdated signage can make your school look outdated as well. Upgrading to new signage can help to modernize your school and give staff students and parents a more positive impression.

5. Cost-Efficiency

While replacing old signage may seem like a large upfront cost, it can actually be cost-effective in the long run. Older signage may require more maintenance and repairs, while new signage is likely to last longer and require less maintenance. Technology has come a long way in the past years. There are now more advanced and cost-efficient sign options available, such as LED and digital signage, which can be more better for your school’s budget in the long run..

Ultimately, the decision to replace old school signage should be based on a combination of factors, including the technology available, the current state and effectiveness of the signage, and any local regulations or compliance issues.

Another exciting addition to the EPSB roster

Dr. Anne Anderson School is another inspiring addition to the Edmonton Public Schools roster and we are so excited to have participated by providing some great school signs. Located at 11810 35 Avenue SW, in the Heritage Valley neighbourhood of Edmonton, this high school will be one of the largest in the city. Being a brand new school, the administration took the opportunity to use signage to bring some history to the environment as well as use signage as a tool to inspire and motivate students, staff and their families.
